Quilt Diary: Sunflower Wooly Mug Rug Finish-Better late than never

This week found me wrapping up the sunflower wooly mug rugs which I have been working on for weeks!  It feels good to finish them up but I find myself behind with my schoolhouse wooly mug rug.  I am linking up the Sunflower Wooly Mug Rugs with Capitola Quilter for another third quarter finish in October.  Hard to believe this is my 6th finish for the quarter. See the original list here.

Other Machine Applique Projects

I didn’t get to do my Friday night stitching because I was exhausted after work on Friday.  It has been a very intense week.  Normally coming home to stitch helps relieve that tension.  Last night I just came home to eat and sleep.  I watch a little Agents of Shield but didn’t even pull out my english paper piecing project.  Went for a walk then to bed.

This morning found me watching quilting videos which never fails to get me motivated.  While waiting for my computer to charge up, I headed to the sewing room.  Laying right there next to the machine is my thread pull for my last two September applique projects.  I put that burgundy thread in and finished up the A Year in Words – Autumn project.  It is now ready for layering and quilting.

I set it aside so I could work on my one monthly goal – Blooming Apples.  I finished up the pink apples which are adorable and stared at my Blooming Pansies for about 10 minutes before I decided that NO I was not going to use pink on the Vase, but would do a purple.  I threaded the machine with the last color (brown) needed for the Blooming Apples and decided that I needed some Starbucks.  Where I find myself now.  That catches you up on the applique projects.img_2203

Sew-A-Long Updates

#100days100blocks2019

I have been posting daily and did a fabric pull for the next 6 blocks.  I am considering putting together row 5 this weekend but thus far, this is all I have done on this project since Wednesday.  Here is blocks for August 22nd – 24th that have been posted.

I have still focused all my time working on this quilt.  I finally finished sewing together row 1.  Now that I have finished 4 blocks, I have a rhythm for sewing these very large blocks.  I had not realized how use to sewing 3.5 and 6.5 inch blocks I have become.  This 18.5 inch blocks just seem huge and I discovered that I am sucking at putting in enough pins.  I want all my points to match so I was putting pins in there but not in between spaces.  I also discovered that it would be easier to match my points if I actually ironed per the directions.  LOL!  I realized Friday morning that it has been a while since I followed an actual pattern.  I have been doing a lot of things where they give you what to cut and show you the layout, but no actual sewing and ironing instructions.  Oops! I have 9 more blocks so I promise to be a good girl and follow instructions….maybe.

I have the pieces pulled for the two outside blocks for row 2.  So far the corner blocks have been the hardest so I am figuring the rest should go together a lot faster.  Based on a youtube video I watched earlier today, I realized that I need to finish cutting my squares for the pieced border to use as leader pieces between piecing.  That will do two things at once.  I won’t get bored with sewing the pieced border and I can sew the blocks per the instructions instead of what allowed me not to break thread.  Here I thought I was done with all the cutting for this quilt.  I have also been thinking about my binding and I thinking I want to do a flanged binding with piecing together the colorful flange piece.  I think it will look fantastic with the pieced border and the bright colors in the quilt.  I have today and tomorrow to finish row 2 for my #onethingwithamy goal for the week.  Here is row 1!img_2204

Nothing new to show you.  I continue making HST.  There are a lot.  If I hadn’t veggied out last night, I would be a heck of a lot closer to having those little puppies done.

I have been thinking that I will be doing this as a Quilt As You Go quilt.  It really makes sense since I have so many colors for this colorwash quilt as well as the fact that this is going to be a huge quilt.  I ordered some more Alison Glass fabric this week including todays one day only Rainbow Bundles with 8 fat quarters!  I loved what I got last year.

Other Quilt Updates

I haven’t really worked on any of the other projects since Wednesday but I thought I might list them out just so I don’t lose sight of them.

I only have a few more blocks for the Zuma Squared lap quilt.  The next step will be sewing the pieced border as well as assembling the top.

I still have my Sunflower & Bees Squared lap quilt which is on this quarters finishalong list.  I sewed together all the strips to the pieced border.  I just need to add the border and sew them on.  Then it will be ready to layer and quilt.

My 2010 NYE Quilt is laying on my ironing board waiting for me to pick it back up to quilt.  I do not like my system I have on my long arm.  I saw a new system for attaching the quilt to the system.  It is on my agenda today to go over and see if they have them in stock and schedule a time for them to come and put it on.  I also need them to see what is wrong with the glide system.

I put the trinket quilt and the knot quilt in the cabinet with the log cabin and jelly roll quilt.  I still have my granddaughters princess quilt top and my candy rail fence quilt top.  So many quilts just waiting to be quilted.  It seems I like making quilt tops but not so much about the quilting.  Yet when I actually start quilting, I love it.

I have the matching fabrics from my recently finished table runner to make up some placemats and matching napkins.

I also still have the halloween, thanksgiving, and valentine placemats cut out and sitting in bins just waiting to be sewn.

There is last year’s 100 days 100 blocks that needs to be assembled.  This is another one I think I am going to try as a QAYG.  Probably do this one first.  I used all scraps from my stash last year so I am not going to freak out if I screw this up.

Also have the two quilt blocks from last year’s Quilter’s Planner to assemble, my Kaffee Fasset quilt, my Halifax Temperature quilt….  Okay.  I am just going to stop right there and relook at my goals for the third quarter finish-a-long to prioritize.  I know that my hexagon charity quilt is on the list so I am taking a deep breath and see where we go.  Sometimes this means simplify the quilting so it gets done.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my rambling.  I appreciate the comments and thoughts that you leave.  I have dreams of doing more than sharing what I am working on, but for now this is what you get.

Coal

I wanted to share a picture of my outside kitty, Coal.  She lives outside because she is a lover not a fighter.  The other kitties in the house just pick on her.  She is much happier living outside.  She meets me every morning and every night for her breakfast and dinner as well as some cuddles.

Happy Quilting and Safe Travels,

Peggy Stockwell
