Quilt Diary: A look back on June and 2nd Quarter and reset for July and 3rd Quarter Goals

Sadly, the only project I finished second quarter was my Strawberry mug rugs in May.  I just can’t seem to be disappointed with all the progress I did make on my projects.  They just didn’t get finished.  I didn’t even finish my June One Monthly Goal with Elm Street.  But oh the progress I have made!  I think Quarter 3 will be a big quarter for finishes.

July One Monthly Goal with Elm Street

My July OMG will be to finish my “May” Easy Pieced Table Runner by Shabby Fabrics in July which I will be linking up with Elm Street Quilts.  June found me finishing all the stitching on the applique and completing the top.  All that is left is to baste, quilt, and bind.  I am looking forward to completing this project.  This also will a project listed below for my Quarterly Goals with the 2019 Finishalong which I am linking up with Capitola Quilter, my host.

Quarter Three Goals

  1.  Hexagon Charity Quilt – I have not done anything on this project.  I only need to finish quilting and binding.  This is a good lesson in taking on projects that you are not in love with.

  2. 2010 New Year’s Eve Quilt.  It is hard to believe that I did not work on this during quarter two.  It is on my ironing board next to the sewing machine.  I had every intention of doing some free motion quilting on this quilt.  I have already done all the stitch in the ditch quilting for the blocks and borders.  If it still makes no progress by quarter end, then I will just trim up and bind so it is done.

  3. 2018 Quilters Planner Sew-A-Long Classic Beauty BOM.  No progress.  Still just need to assemble, baste, quilt, and bind.

  4. Sunflower A-Door-nament Wall Hanging by Shabby Fabrics.  WooHoo!  I made a lot of progress on this one during the month of June.  I decided to forgo the metallic thread and to stick with my Aurfil cotton thread.  I only need to quilt the gold and the details for the leaf and this one will be all done!!!  Just in time to be hung up in August!

August A-Door-Naments Wall Hanging
  • Apple A-Door-nament Wall Hanging by Shabby Fabrics.  Another one that there is forward movement.  Not as much as the sunflower but definitely moving forward.

  • Sunflower Ohio Star potholders
  • Blue Pinwheel potholders.  No progress on 6 or 7.  Still need to layer, baste, quilt, and bind.

  • Autumn Wall Hanging by Shabby Fabrics.  Another one that I have been working on.  I got out my 20D foot and 9mm plate so I could blanket stitch all the green, orange, and brown on this one so far.  I still have orange, red, and gold left to stitch on appliques, layer, baste, quilt, and bind.  Let’s see how much progress we make this quarter on this little project.

  • Apple Blooming Vase Wall Hanging by Shabby Fabrics.  No progress.  Background is pieced and shapes are cut.  I need to fuse, applique, layer, baste, quilt, and bind this one.

  • Pansies Blooming Vase Wall Hanging by Shabby Fabrics.  No progress.  It is still in the I want to stage.

  • 2019 Alison Glass Trinket FPP Sew-Along.  Whew!  This project hogged a lot of my time and effort.  Being new to foundation paper piecing and having to make anywhere from two to four of every block, this one was a time sucker.  My FPP improved a lot and I managed to stay current throughout the SAL.  I did not get the top finished by the deadline but it did get finished.  It is neatly folded up and on the book shelf for now.  I am leaving it on the list just in case I get a hankering to finish.  I have decided on straightline quilting for this one.  It needs to be layered, basted, quilted, and bound.

  • Sunflower Mug Rugs by Shabby Fabrics.  Yes I like the applique that Shabby Fabrics produces.  This project is close to being done and should be a slam dunk for this quarter.  I only have left the sunflower seeds (oyster stitch), the ladybug, layer, bind (with blanket stitch).  So very close…..

  • Easy Pieced Table Runner for May by Shabby Fabrics.  This was another one that I worked a lot on this past quarter and have made a ton of progress.  The piecing is easy.  Even the fusing of the applique is easy, but it takes a lot of time to blanket stitch all those little pieces.  Blanket stitch is my favorite way to applique the pieces down.  I just can’t bring myself to do straight stitch especially on a project like this that I will be washing a lot.

  • Halifax Temperature Quilt (September 2017 – August 2019).  I made quite a few blocks but ran out of pre-cut triangles for my HST squares.  I need to cut some more and put by the sewing machine.  I should be finishing this up this quarter, hopefully.

  • Baby Rag Quilt.  This is a project that I have the pattern picked out but not the fabric yet.  The baby is due in September, so I need to jump on this one.

  • Patio Table Cloth for Caitlin.  I have the fabric pull for this one and a basic pattern in my head.  This is figure it out as you go kind of project.  My daughter requested  tablecloth for her patio table.  I am flying to Halifax in July and again in August so got to get it done!

  • Easter Egg A-door-naments Wall Hanging by Shabby Fabrics.  I started this project with my granddaughter Grace just before Easter but we never finished.  I’ve made a lot of progress and there is not much left to do to finish up this project.

  • Jack O’Lantern A-door-naments Wall Hanging by Shabby Fabrics.  Since I am on a roll with this series, I plan on finishing up the October one by quarter end too.

  • Schoolhouse Wooly Mug Rug by Shabby Fabrics.  Another Wooly project that I am doing by hand.  My sunflowers are almost done and I want to have another in the wings ready to go.

  • Jack ‘O Lantern Wooly Mug Rug.  Why not?  I should be able to get this ready to be worked on as well-another hand project.  There will be a lot of travel this quarter.  I am imagining a lot of progress on hand projects.

  • Quarter Three: Work in Process

    1. Peacock Colorstory Miss Rosie Blocks.  I finished my eight blocks last quarter.  So let’s plan on another eight for this quarter.  They make great between projects.  I like to make two blocks at a time and these fit the bill.
      img_0436
    2. 365 Block Quilt Challenge Blocks.  With doing the trinketsal, I fell behind on this 365 day challenge, but unlike last year, I continue to whittle away at it.  I have finished all the blocks for the first dark border and I will sew that together and attach this quarter as well as finishing my May and June blocks this quarter.  I am on May 4th as of this posting. Deadline December 2019.

  • Quilter’s Planner 2019 Block of the Month Sew-A-Long.  I am still current on this one and even a little ahead.  I finished the July blocks yesterday.  My goal is to stay current. Deadline December 2019.
    img_1807
  • Farmer’s Wife 1920 English Paper Piecing Sew-A-Long sponsored by Gnome Angel in Australia.  I only finished four blocks this quarter which is surprising.  Not sure why.  I am currently working on block 24.  I am setting a goal for 9 blocks this quarter again.  That is just 3 blocks a month.  Maybe all the travel will help this one move along. Deadline October 2019.

  • Tula Pink Charm Squared blocks.  No progress this past quarter.  I am setting a goal of finishing the blocks this quarter.  Another one that works well between more complicated projects.  Hmmm.

  • #100days100blocks2019 Sew-A-Long Kinship Fusion Sampler sponsored by Gnome Angel started on July 1st.  As of today, I am current and even a wee bit ahead.  My goal is to stay current and sew the rows as I go.  Deadline October 2019.

  • Recap

Quite a few projects on my plate as usual.  All of the WIP projects above are multi-quarter projects or projects I want to make some progress on.  As you may have noticed I have a few applique series in progress (and more in the wings).  I have been focusing on the Wooly Mug Rug, Adoornaments, and Blooming Vases.  It will be nice to complete a few series.  You may have also noticed that I have two hand projects as well – Wooly Mug Rugs and EPP Farmer’s Wife 1920.  I have restrained myself from starting any other ones until one of these are done.  The wooly mug rugs are hand embroidery projects and there is another one in the wings for that as well as another EPP project that I am dying to start.  To top it off, I have 4 quilt tops on this list to be quilted from baby to queen size and another 20 in the wings.  I am currently participating in 4 sewalongs.  Do you think my lack of focus is why I am not finishing much?  I’m telling you though, I feel a big finish coming this quarter…..

    Sunflower Quilting Finish-A-Long Quarter 3 goals #ssqfinishalong2019

    #1 – Hexagon Charity Quilt

    #15 – Baby Rag Quilt

    #16 – Patio TableCloth

That’s a wrap for this quarter and July goal setting.  I am finding that #onethingwithamy each week is working well at setting small goals and creating forward momentum.  I have almost finished the table runner with the weekly breakdown of steps.  It is awesome.  The week of July 8th will be to layer & baste my Easy Pieced Table Runner.  All I have left to get back into is the 15 minutes a day goal.  June was work 15 minutes on a wip.  Wow! What a difference that made.  This month the #sbbsewfor15 is designing a quilt.  I can maybe incorporate the baby quilt to make that happen.  It’s not like I really have a pattern to work with, just an idea.  Let me go find those rules on IG.

    1. Wow, you made me tired looking at all of the projects you got done and loved the 2019 Alison Glass Trinket blanket. It was fun watching the pieces being made and the final project was beautiful…
Can’t wait to see what you do with the Peacock Colorstory Miss Rosie Blocks for final project blanet.
Thanks for making all of these beautiful blankets/table runners/door-wall hangers and showing them off… Wishing I had your talent!

    2. Happy quilting! Thanks for linking up with Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal and good luck with your project. Love your trinket quilt.
