Quilt Diary: Finished A-Door-naments Series – Easter Egg

I thought I would whip out my blog on my first finish for Quarter 3 Finish-A-Long.  I am linking up with Capitola Quilter.  You can see the original list here.

Easter A-Door-Naments

I finished up my Easter Adoornament wall hanging.  Did I mention this series is suppose to be hung on a door knob and I have opted to make it a wall hanging. It is actually quick and easy when you stop trying to use metallic thread.  When I went back to cotton thread for machine applique and accents, I just whipped through this.  It is pictured above.

Other A-Door-Naments

I did fuse my other one on the finish-a-long list: Jack O’Lanterns.  It is going to be adorable.  For my Sunflower one, I just have to finish up the yellow and brown and do some embellishment on that one.  Apples have a long way to go but I have gotten some green and pink done.  I am really hankering to do yellow machine applique right now.  I pulled out my favorite yellow gold which blends really well with all shades of yellow and will really look cute with my current projects.  I am out and about traveling currently so it will have to wait until next week.  So three more of these to finish up this quarter!

Blooming Series

I was able to fuse both the Apples and Pansies wall hangings from the Quarterly List.  Wish I had added the Pumpkins, but for now they are not on the list.  This series has a lot of pieces and possibilities.  Apples was my first one and I struggled with that one until I developed a system to deal with it.  Attempting to match size and color as intended is very challenging.  Originally I did not use my light tablet.  I ended up pulling that out and it became a breeze.  I laid out the like pieces and assigned the numbers on the back.  So glad I thought of that.  That is actually a McKenna Ryan trick.  Worked like a charm when I began fusing.  Doing the numbering first, then fuse after everything is numbered is the way to go.  I was able to move things about.  I used frixon pens to number in case I changed my mind.  There are over 60 pieces for each month in this series.  But dang it looks good.

I am a little rusty on my fusing.  when I did the Adoornaments I did not use all my tools at hand.  Maybe a total of 10 pieces versus the 60 with this series.  One of the tools I pulled out was my new Fuse-A-Mat.  Oh my God!  It is fantastic.  I will never go back.  The pieces don’t lose their glue, they come off easily, and you can pull them up before they have even cooled.  I bought the 17×30 size but wish I had the 12×17 which fits my light tablet.

A Year in Words Series – Autumn

This is the other series that I am MACHINE appliqueing this quarter.  I have made some progress in the last week but nothing you would really notice from last picture.  I still have yellow, orange and brown to do on this on.  It is very cute.  That wraps up machine applique for the quarter.  On to hand applique.

Wooly Mug Rug Series – Sunflower, Schoolhouse, & Jack ‘O Lantern

I am close to finishing the sunflower.  I did cut and fuse the head to the ladybug which I forgot initially.  Other than that, I have not really worked on it this week.  Hopefully while I am traveling these 5 days.  Because it has been a while, I will need to refresh my memory on the oyster stitch again.  Then all is left is the ladybug and “binding” the front and back with the blanket stitch in black pearl cotton.

I was able to trace, cut, and fuse the Schoolhouse before the trip waiting for that moment of hand applique with wool thread.  I also was able to cut out the black from front and back too.  Cute.

Jack O’Lantern has moved to my work area.  Nothing more.  I am really liking the idea of prepping everything at the beginning of the quarter.  It feels like I am setting myself up for success.

Farmers Wife 1920 EPP Sew-a-long

I really got stalled on this with Shaun doing hockey camp during the day.  I normally work on this project while he is at practice or private lessons.  Without that, not much opportunity to work on.  I wrapped up Farmer’s Path – Block 24 last weekend as well as cutting and gluing blocks 25 and 26.  There is close to 50 pieces in both blocks.  The gluing and cutting took forever.  While I was working on it, I watch tv and I realized that I could cut and bag blocks ahead of time now that I finished coloring out my quilt.  Then gluing whenever it is convenient.  After I finished block 24, I had nothing waiting in the wings.  Since I have been on this set myself up for success kit, I think this could do the trick.

I have almost finished all the units for block 25 while flying.  Just two more units to make out of the 9.  Not bad I am thinking.

I got it cut out.  I thought I might finish it before this trip but just ran out of time.  I have to finish it before August 7th so it will become a priority.

Baby Rag Quilt – Whales

My biggest accomplishment was finally finding fabric that excited me for this quilt.  I found some adorable whale focus fabric and a complimentary fish fabric.  I have picked out some solids and blenders that I think will go.  Next weekend will be working on this quilt.  The deadline for this quilt is August 7th as well.  I need it finished to take to Caitlin so she has it for her labmate’s shower.  I finished this off the day before leaving so I do not have a pick of just the whale fabric so here is the other focus fabrics I found and bought before settling on whales.

#100days100blocks2019

img_1893.jpg

I am happy to report that I am current on this sew-a-long.  I think I told you I decided to use the new Alison Glass Holiday fabrics.  I also worked out in my head that all the 8×8 blocks would be red, pink, and/or white while the 4×8 blocks would be aqua, green, and/or yellow.  I sewed together the first 10 blocks into  row and really love it.  I also sewed those in the order made but it is highly unlikely that I will do that again.  Later blocks have more less of the white or yellow and I feel it needs to be better distributed.  I was able to sew ahead so I could post every day while on vacation.

#365quiltblockchallenge

Ever since we moved to 6 inch blocks the difficulty has stepped up a notch.  Then add in another sew-a-long and this puts this challenge on a very slow road.  I did finish up the May 6th block and cut four more blocks.  Forward progress is a positive.

I sewed some more blocks this week after pairing up everything.  I still need to do a quilt layout for this.  I would prefer to do a 7×6 layout but I only have 40 blocks paired up so far.  I am going to have to see if I can “make” two more blocks.  Meanwhile, quite a few more blocks completed.

Easy Pieced Table Runner – May

I did work on this over the weekend as well.  I was able to layer and baste this project.  It is ready to be quilted! So I meet my weekly goal #onethingwithamy.  That was very cool.

It didn’t seem like I did much during the weekend and the few days before heading out on vacation, but in reality I spent a little time on many different projects.  Happy with my progress.

Happy Quilting everyone.  My next post will be a travel post for my trip I am on to Halifax with a critique of the airlines as well as some cool places we visited.
