Quilt Diary: May Easy Pieced Table Runner Finish!!!

This is my second finish for this quarter which puts me ahead of last quarter already (lol!).  I am excited to have finished this table runner.  This series has it all for someone like me who is a wee bit ADD.  I like to work on multiple things and get bored easily.  There is piecing, applique, embroidery, and quilting.  There was the planning of the colors because I choose not to purchase the kit that is offered (but the pattern is free!)  When I redid my kitchen, my main decorating color has been teal.  I am not saying other things won’t look great, but I really didn’t have any nice table runners, place-mats or anything.  Since I am going to do them, I want things to go more with the chosen gray and teal decor.  This was my second such project. (See Christmas set here.)  Out of my Quilty Box was this gorgeous fat quarters that I thought was perfect.  This fabric line (Moda Walkabout) has been fun with the the stripes.

Here are pictures of the free-motion and applique.  If you follow me on Instagram @quiltadventures then you have already seen them.

I have left over fabric so I am envisioning some place mats, napkins, and potholders in my future.

QUILT GOAL CHALLENGES

I am in a few goal oriented challenges.  One is weekly, two are monthly, and the other two are quarterly as well.  Here are the updates on those.

#onethingwithAmy with @amyscreativeside on Instagram

Last week’s challenge was to finish the quilting on my table runner above.  Since it is a small project I ended up doing it on my Bernina.  I did stitch in the ditch with my walking foot as well as baste down the outside edges.  I used my ruler foot (#96) most of the time because I was switching between ruler work and regular free motion quilting.  Honestly, I usually only use the ruler for straight work.  I tend to wing it otherwise.  I got out my Angela Walters books – Shape by Shape & Meandering.  On the applique portion was a lot of negative space so I did a meandering loop there and a couple of my go to fmq patterns for the gray and teal.  For the squares, I ended up breaking it up into quadrants and I wanted the quadrants to match my little aqua squares so I had like borders inside the big coral squares.  My fmq didn’t look anything like the book but it is pleasing to look at.  I ended up using a gray thread for the pieced blocks and bluegray thread for the negative space in the applique portion at the ends.  It was fun and relaxing.  It is not a gift so I was not worried about mistakes.  I finished at 11:30 on Sunday night.  Whew!  Cutting it close.

This week’s challenge is to add the binding to this very same table runner.  I’m secretly hoping it is done by Wednesday so I will not be posting this blog until July 31st (or sooner if I finish quickly)!  This Monday morning, the binding was sewn and ironed.  Tonight will find me attaching it and then I just got to hand sew it down over the next two days.

#onemonthlygoal linking up with Elm Street Quilts

If all goes as planned, this post will be linked up to Elm Street Quilts for a July Monthly Goal finish.  The July goal was to finish the May Easy Pieced Table Runner.

This month’s challenge was to design quilts.  I have been working on my Zuma quilt, the baby rag quilt, and the patio table cloth for this month’s challenges.  Here is the coloring sheets I made for the Zuma Quilt that I did in Noteability on my iPad with the apple pencil.  I then printed it out to be colored as I finish up the blocks to figure out the layout.  I should have probably done that before I started sewing, but oh well!  The baby quilt I also made a coloring sheet and I did add piece count and yardage as this quilt is one that I do frequently but I end up starting over every time since I have never documented it before.  See below for progress updates on all three projects.

My goals this Quarter were the Hexagon Charity quilt, baby rag quilt, and patio table cloth.  I have not worked on quilting the Hexagon Charity quilt, but see below progress on the other two both of which have be finished to go on the plane August 7th.  I have already posted one progress picture for the baby rag quilt and two of the patio table cloth a couple of weeks ago.

As mentioned in the opening, this is my second finish this quarter and I will be linking up in October for this finish.  With how this next 7 days are going, I may very well have two more finishes to add soon.  My original Quarter 3 list can be found here

SEW-A-LONGS & QUILT-A-LONGS

I am such a gluten for punishment.  These feed my ADD tendencies and I am currently participating in the following SALs & QALs.

#365blockchallenge with Katheryn Kerr

Some will remember that I started this in Jan 2018 and totally did a face plant by March.  I was moving a long like gang busters in 2019 with a breath of fresh air until I participated in the #trinketsal.  Now I am limping a long with a couple of blocks at a time.  Since my last post I have completed 3 – 6″ inch blocks (May 7th-9th).  See below.  I only have one cut block left, so I will need to cut a few more so I don’t stall.

I have finished Block 25 – Cups & Saucers since the last post.  It is slow going but it is going.  Love this block.  It is so bright and cheerful.  Block 26 is on deck and is currently being worked on. There are 51 pieces in block 26.   It is “purple & red”, a transition block in my color scheme.  I got smart and cut two more blocks with plans of working on either in front of tv or on the plane.  Easily transportable at this point.

This SAL is a daily challenge in full swing.  It started on July 1st and takes some planning due to my travel schedule.  So far so good.  This year we are using the Kinship Fusion Sampler pattern designed by @gnomeangel and friends.  The blocks are pretty quick and easy and I choose to do Alison Glass Holiday Fabric line.  Below is the first 30 blocks all sewn up.

This one starts this Friday, August 2nd.  I received the pattern on Monday and have done my fabric pull.  I have to pick up background fabric which I have decided should be black or navy.  It only runs through August so it will be quick.  Still waiting for the rules and how we participate….

Just waiting for August to get here.  Block is cut and ready baby!

QUILT SERIES

A-Door-Naments – Sunflower, Apples, & Jack ‘O Lantern

Slowly working through the colors.  Really would like to finish up the Sunflower this week as it is supposed to be displayed in August.  I only have the embroidery on the green leaves left.  Maybe tonight.  Last Friday was a yellow thread day so worked on all three wall hangings.

Blooming Series – Pansies & Apples

No progress on the Apples yet, but while doing the yellow thread on Friday I did the yellow centers of all the flowers.  One step forward!

Wooly Mug Rugs – Sunflower, Schoolhouse, & Jack ‘O Lantern

I haven’t really done much on these since my last post.  Nothing worth posting a picture about anyway.  I am still working on the oyster stitch seeds on the sunflower.  Want to finish up soon as these Sunflowers are to be used/displayed during August as well.

A Year in Words – Autumn

Actually the applique is almost done on this one.  With doing yellow on Friday, that only leaves red left to do on this applique project.  WhooHoo!  After finishing up the Sunflower Adoornament, then there will be the push to finish this one since it is close.  But with red as the color, there is a lot of stitching on all of projects.

Other Projects on the Sewing Table that I worked on since last post

Actually we have almost covered everything.  A quick recap

Caitlin’s Patio Tablecloth

No change since last time.  It is all cut just needs to be sewn.  Time is running out.  It is another project that needs to be in the suitcase when I fly to Canada on Wednesday, August 7th.

Tula Pink Charm Quilt

I have been sewing random blocks throughout the week as leaders between other blocks and projects because it is an easy block with only 5 pieces.  Up above you will see I developed a coloring sheet.  Once I finish the blocks then I will use the coloring sheet to figure out my layout.  Here are the latest blocks.

Others

I have not worked on my Halifax Temperature Quilt or Miss Rosie’s Peacock quilt blocks.  I have plans to work on them.  I need to cut more triangles so when I cut the baby quilt blocks, I will whip out the triangles for the temperature quilt.  This is another great little block (hst) for between stuff.

That wraps up this week’s blog.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you again soon.

Happy Quilting,

Peggy Stockwell
