QUILT DIARY: What’s Under My Needle in December

I’ve been in the office and on the road a lot more this month than I thought I would. I did manage to still get a few things done.

Another Napkin Finish

Completed Autumn/Fall Napkins !

I am going to have to say these are my most favorite napkins to date. I also am really like the idea of using some of the fabric in my table runners and/or placemats but throwing in other fabrics as well. It makes it really easy to expand on these later.

As you can tell my napkins are double sided. If I owned a serger, I probably would only make them with one fabric (maybe). There doesn’t seem to be any standard size napkin other than it being square. I have made napkins as small as 10 inches and as large as 14 inches. Sometimes each side is all one piece of fabric like these above and other times they are pieced together with leftovers.

There are no hard and fast rules is what I am getting at. I love using these fabric napkins. It really gives me a very green feel because they are reuseable. I am sure they will wear out eventually, but with making them more haphazard that leaves it easy to replace them.

Are You Game? Mystery Quilt Update

To be sewn Clues 5 & 6

Last month, I finished up through clue 4. I was thinking I had finished clue 5 this month because 6 came today. When I wasn’t finding a picture, I went through my rolling assistant (cart) and discovered them on the bottom. Oops! So today I will be working on both clues 5 and 6 for the small and large quilts.

Halloween Quilt Update

Four rows complete on the Halloween Perfect 10 quilt

I finished one more row on this quilt before putting it away for the rest of this month. I am really enjoying this quilt, I just have too many things on my plate and wanted to work on my Christmas quilts this month.

Monthly Color Challenge by Patterns by Jen

My “Buff” block using Alison Glass fabrics (November)

Buff is an interesting color. I had to google the color because I wasn’t even sure what the color looked like. Unfortunately for me, buff is not a color that Alison uses in her lines. The closest I could come is the brown yellow. I do love Jen’s instructions. She is so good with instructions!

Quilter’s Planner Block of the Month

November Block

This block was foundation paper piecing. I am not a big fan of foundation paper piecing. It turned out not to be so bad after all to actually sew. December’s block is also foundation paper piecing so of course I have been procrastinating. LOL! I will get it done before the end of the month I promise.

Christmas Advent Wedding Quilt Update

The pieced back of the Wedding Quilt

I have probably spent the majority of my time on this quilt this month. I finished piecing the pieced border and then began adding the borders to the quilt. There were minor adjustments that were required but I love how it turned out. The feature picture is the front of the quilt. I accidentally discovered “floating” borders about five years ago and it is a favorite technique of mine.

Once I finished adding the borders it was time to work on the back. This quilt is very large 87 x 92. I had 2 yards each of this ombre snowflake fabric in red, white, green, and black. Doing the math on this took me probably a week and one day to cut and sew it all together.

It took me one whole afternoon to spray baste it. I thought I had done pretty good with no wrinkles. Alas! I was wrong. I have been working on ironing the wrinkles out since I spray basted it. Once I have all the wrinkles out, it will be quilting time. I have it about 3/4 of the way done now. It takes patience to work the creases out of the spray baste. I will put a few more hours into ironing again this weekend.

Wrap Up

While I still have on my sewing table and rolling assistant additional projects, these were the ones I have actually worked on so far this month or will today.

I need to finish my last clue for the Cosmos quilt and bind my Spring placemats. I have in the very bottom basket on the cart a jelly roll race quilt for a PhD graduation present for Jannes. I have everything to finish borders and backs. I also have to finish quilting my Knot Quilt. It is half quilted and bind that baby. I was secretly hoping to finish by the end of the year. That was a little optomistic.

I hope Christmas was a a joyful and safe holiday for all of you.

Peggy
