WIP Updates

Not sure if you caught my friday cross stitch post (here), but I am totally into the World Cup 2026. I spent my weekend with all the soccer games on while I was tootling around the house doing chores, art, and stitching. Because of that I really got some quality time with my English Paper Piecing for the first time in ages. This whole month I was gaining momentum with stitching 30 minutes most nights. It’s hard to believe that I have already finished 2 EPP blocks and am well on my way to finish a third. I only had four prepped so need to start working on some more. Let’s take a look.

Ruby’s Garden by Me Using PaperPieces.Com free Double Diamond pattern

First photo is the actual block done, but I am adding sashing to two sides as I go. My “background” color is my sashing. My grandma Ruby used a lighter turquoise than I have here but it is still in the spirit of the wedding quilt she made me and that I am reproducing.

Grandma Ruby’s Double Diamond Flower block

Here is the quilt my Grandma Ruby made for my wedding. You can see why Lori Holt fabrics were my pick. I was surprised she used the turquoise background. It was a good choice. I know she shopped yard sales for used clothing to use in a lot of her quilts as well as new fabric. You can see her hand quilting as well as all her tiny stitches connecting the hexies. I found it totally fascinating that she changed out her thread to match the fabric. I am not sure if it is because she used poly batting or if the fabric was already worn, but you can also see where there are holes forming on some of the hexies. I am eternally grateful that she gave this quilt to me for my wedding.

At the time, I was not a quilter but found the process fascinating. She would cut hundreds of paper templates (with scissors) after using a cardboard template to draw with a pencil. Then she would use that same template to draw each fabric hexie. Obviously, there were no rotary cutters or paper pieces precut back then. No glue either. I loved watching her work on these.

I am grateful for all the cool tools we have today to make our craft so much easier!

Queen of Diamonds by Pink Door Fabrics

The Ruby’s Garden block took longer than I remembered. I guess all those 1 inch hexies (17 for the block and 11 for the sashing) just take time to sew together. It makes this block feel super easy! I am basically make a total of 8 triangles. 6 are arranged into a hexie then topped off with a triangle to get the diamond shape. I have already finished 3 of the triangles and made half my hexie center. Plus this Tula Pink fabric is just FUN!

Autumn Seed Quilt by Lori Holt (Bee in My Bonnet)

I wrapped up block 7 of this 9 pumpkin block series. I had to deconstruct because I put the bottom of the pumpkin on upside down. The deconstruction took longer than sewing it but wasn’t as bad as I imagined. I am totally jazzed with the result.

I cut block 8 already but forgot to take a pic.

Abby Rose Churn Dash Quilt (by Me)

I have a plan to finish four blocks this month. Here is the first one done. Because I thought I was going to make back up to my sewing room, I do not have a picture of block 2 WIP. It is blue.

June Monthly Color Challenge from Patterns by Jen

Sorry no photo. Same excuse as above. I honestly thought I was going to do some quilting this past weekend. After I finished Quilt Zoom with all my quilt retreat friends, I headed to the fabric / long arm room to dig through a few more boxes (that were unopened) of fabric to find my black and gray Alison Glass fabrics. This month the color is Gray. Luckily I found what I was looking for and even cut the block. It is ready to be sewn. Today I am at Barnes and Noble working on my blog so can’t run upstairs to take a pic.

Weekly To Do List

Finished top ~ 2018 100 blocks Batik City Sampler 8/15/2024

While I was looking for my gray fabrics, I found the boxes I repacked when the electrician was here to put in lighting for the sewing studio. I uncovered my quilt tops and this is the first one I want to long arm. It was my first 100 block challenge using Tula Pink & Angela Walters 100 block book. I absolutely love how this turned out and am anxious to finally quilt it.

Last Weeks List that got Done
  • Cut June Monthly Color Challenge
  • Finish Autumn Seed Block 7

While I got other things done, they were not on the list. Which is why I love long list. It makes me feel more accomplished. LOL! 🐿️ Then I don’t have to admit to squirrel moments.

Happy Mail

Well now that I am signed up for a few projects, they just keep coming in. I am really wanting to learn some regular sewing which is why I signed up for the renaissance ribbon mini club. The pillow club … well it is not a wall hanging.

Renaissance Ribbon Tula Pink Mini Project

I received my second box of this every other month box. So I haven’t finished the first which was the lunch box and I want to finish that one first. This one looks more complicated than that one. We shall see how long it takes before I get moving. My friend Mary Elizabeth made me one of these 10 years ago which I still use for quilting classes. We just haven’t done one in a while. I think I might repurpose it to be my quilt retreat goody holder. Then use this one for handstitching or vice-versa. Whatever works right.

Shabby Fabric Monthly Kit: The Whole Country Caboodle Sparkle Pillow Wrap & Cover Kit for July

I love the kits from Shabby Fabrics. They are always laser cut. This use to be the exception instead of the rule. It saves a ton of time. Although I am find with making my own pieces and picking my own fabrics. This gorgeous. Maybe this is the project I should start for my applique project so I can play on my new 990. I do all my traditional piecing on my Tula Pink 770. I have a kit for the over the top pillow kit whose name I am drawing a blank on right now. She is famous but here I am blanking on her name. She has a ton of embellishments. I don’t always have the patience for the embellishments.

Musings

I am not sure if I will be doing any musing here this week as I seemed to have been rambling this whole post. That already has made it very long.

I did go to my quilt guild meeting last week. It was only my second one. It was nice that I knew people there since I have been participating in their Friday Zoom Sit n Sew. It was more business as they were finalizing elections and installing officiers. Committees gave their updates. They have a bus that you can sign up for to go to the Sisters Quilt show. That reminds me I need to do that now before it fills up.

Thanks again for stopping by. Love reading the comments and sharing my projects with you. Have a great week! 🐿️🐿️🐿️
