Quilt Diary: Updates for February 2020

It has been a very busy two weeks since my last posting.  Unfortunately, not a lot of quilting has happened with time on the road and my daughter Caitlin home visiting.  She left to go skiing today for this next week.  When she gets back, Shaun and I will be at the first round of hockey playoffs in Simi Valley, CA.  Let’s get started with the updates.

Challenges

Cosmos Mystery Quilt is hosted by Cotton Cuts.  I was able to finish Clue 7 since we lost chatted.  Here is the finished clues:

Rose Mystery Quilt clue 1, hosted by Cotton Cuts, is here.  I’ve started sewing this new mystery clue.  Here is the completed first clue:img_3836

Lost & Found Quilt-A-Long is hosted by Paper Pieces.  I prepped blocks 3 & 4 after reading this month’s blog.  Just a reminder, that each month is focusing on a different color scheme.  Block 3 is almost done and there is a story to go with this block.  While at the hotel in San Diego, I was working on this block in the hotel room.  I had prepped my last row which were one inch hexies with tiny equilateral triangles that would be attached.  If you remember last month, I had confiscated a little container off my Alaska flight to keep all these triangles in.  I had my triangles in the container (without a lid) and housekeeping threw them away.  I was pretty shocked that it had happened.  I’ve never had housekeeping taking something off the desk.  They usually just empty the garbage.  I asked to look through the garbage when I got back to the room.  They wouldn’t let me do that but they did.  The spent an hour looking for my 12 white triangles.  No luck.  Totally derailed me.  It was another day before I picked up the block and finished attaching the pieces I did have. I still need to “recover” 12 white triangles and re-cut fabric for block 4 (as I stole its pieces).  I am close to being done with block 3.  Here is my progress on block 3 and fabric cut for block 4:img_3833

Smash That Stash Swap block has been cut and sewn.  I have even sent a picture to both my host Gnome Angel and my swap partner.  It will be mailed out after I receive the mailing address from our host.  I can’t wait to see where I am mailing it to.  Here is the finished block:img_3830

Meadowland Quiltalong is hosted by Then Came June.  I finished week 1 which was cut all blocks and week 2 which was sew 5 blocks.  Sunday, February 23rd is the end of week 3 and I am in the middle of sewing the next 5 blocks and a few extras for my quilt.  Here are week 2’s blocks:

Here is week 3’s blocks I finished:

Sugaridoo Bernina SAL is hosted by Sugaridoo and Bernina.  I am still stuck on the freezer paper row from month 2 which was Row 1.  Now we are in month 4 so I am 3 rows behind.  I do not see where I will have time to work on this until March to figure out the freezer paper thing.  Month 4 is also foundation paper pieced.  #sigh  But I haven’t given up on it yet!

APQ Resolution is hosted by All People Quilt.  This month is project #9 which for me is my Quilter’s Planner 2018 BOM – Sunflower Colorway.  I have not worked on this since my last blog with being out of town and all.  I did do a fabric pull for the back which includes a panel from the fabric line.  Here is the fabric pull:img_3835

Project #2 from January is ready to be squared up and binding added.  My #onethingwithAmy two weeks ago was to finish prepping the binding.  Check.  I did not have a goal with Amy this week.  Finishing this NYE Quilt is my #onemonthlygoal with Elm Street Quilts.  We have one week left!  So I will be making the binding, my #onethingwithAmy for this week.  I have until Thursday to get this one done!

Jeweled Facet SAL hosted by Karie Jewel just never happened.  So I am dropping it from my current list of things to do.  I really would have like to do it, unfortunately, February is just too much travel.  I am struggling with the projects that are under way.

My Other Projects

As I mentioned, not a lot got done in the past two weeks since I have been traveling.  But because I am traveling I did get an opportunity to work on my Candy Cane Wooly Mug Rugs.   I finished the scroll stitch on the outline of the candy canes in white metallic dazzle thread.  It was actually fun stitch!  A nice change for me.img_3829

When my lost&found block was in disarray, I pulled out my Farmer’s Wife block 38 and started working on it.  There are so many pieces and no easy to follow logically pattern.  I ended up having to label the rows with A & B.  I have pieced the units for 1A thru 4A.  Once I finish piecing the 4B-6B individual units, I will start piecing each A / B, then the row.

Travel Update for the wrap up!

We were in San Diego, CA for 6 days over the President’s Day Weekend.  My grandson Shaun’s hockey team crushed it.  The won all their games including the Championship by 6 or more goals.  We had quite a few family members there for the weekend including his mom, stepdad, and youngest sister.  Caitlin arrived, after a five hour delay, on Saturday.  As usual, she planned all free time.  We had dim sum on Sunday, Safari Park and Melting Pot on Monday, before heading home on Tuesday.  Tuesday we headed to the rink just two hours after landing for a scrimmage with an older team.  The boys got their butt kicked.  Coach was not happy.  Wednesday Shaun and Caitlin went rock climbing before Yoga (and hockey practice).  Thursday was the Chabot Science Museum.  If you have never gone, you should.  It is very cool.  Saturday found us kayaking in Monterey Bay.  I wish I could have had a camera,  We saw baby otters, baby harbor seals, and juvenile sea lions as well as crabs, gray whale, starfish, and sea anemones.  Now you know why I haven’t gotten any sewing done.

  1. Hey sis! Love catching up! I hate that you lost your triangles to housekeeping, but at least you didn’t lose your marbles!

I love the Meadowland blocks! Remind me of Grandma’s pot holders.

Fun trip! Happy you saw your girl and had such a cool kayaking experience. It’s on my bucket list. ;0)
