Quilt Diary: October One Monthly Goal

I missed my September One Monthly Goal, so I am resetting that same goal for October.  I will finish 4 Halloween placemats.  I was defeated by my sewing machine last month.  Of course if I had not waited til the last week to press forward, it would have been a non issue.  I just need to finish free motion quilting and binding these cute placemats. I am linking up with Patty at Elm Street Quilts.  Quilting these 4 placemats are this week’s #onethingwithAmy goal as well.

I am dreaming of making coordinating table runner, napkins, and potholders.  Maybe some cute mug rugs.  We shall see how the month develops.  I am making Halloween Hexie Flowers with these fun fabrics to be used somewhere.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays.  I am anxious to build up my table dressing for this great holiday.

Now for some other updates.

Other Halloween Projects on the Sewing Table

This will be repeated when I do my Quarter 4 Goals in a few days, but I just could not wait to show you the other cute Halloween Projects.  First up is the cutest Blooming Series – Pumpkins. Shabby Fabrics did a great job with the laser pre-cut applique shapes.  This series is a challenging series with a lot of pieces.  Even if I finish this one late, I could carry it forward to November.img_2665

Next up is my October wooly mug rug – Jack ‘O Lantern.  A free project on Shabby Fabrics website.  I had ordered the kit to make it easier as this series was my first wool project.  I will have to draw out on the fusible shapes still.  Then iron onto the wool.  I find it amazingly easy to work with the wool.  A very satisfying feeling to have no raveling.

A Year in Words – Halloween will be one of my major pushes to finish for this month since it literally says Halloween.  A nice laser pre-cut kit by Shabby Fabrics.  If I don’t get done in time, I will have to wait an entire year to display.  It goes well with my Halloween theme – black, orange, purple, green.img_2664

My last Halloween project will be the  free Easy Pieced October Table Runner by Shabby Fabrics.  It is so cute with the haunted house.  I did a little shopping therapy last weekend and I am really happy with the fabric pull for this project.  When I made the May version, I forgot to draw, fuse, and cut two of the applique piece of this project.  I am not use to making two of my projects.  LOL!

Such an exciting month of makes ahead.

Sew-A-Long Updates

#100days100blocks2019

Hard to believe this Sew-A-Long is almost done.  We posted block 96 today.  It seemed to go fast but on the other hand, it seems like I have been doing it forever.  It has been fun working with Alison Glass’ first holiday line.  Color palette has been very limited with red, pink, aqua, and olive green with tons and tons of stripes or directional fabrics.  A new skill learning how to do flying geese and half square triangles.

Here are blocks 93-96 (October 1st – 4th)

#FW1920EPPSAL

Since @gnomeangel abandon this sew-a-long, my next post update will be moving this project to a new section called English Paper Piecing.  I am really getting into EPP and have several kits I will start soon.  Meanwhile, I’ve made a lot of progress on block 31 – Evening Star.  The new bundle of low volume from Alison Glass is working out well for this section of my quilt.  Here is a progress picture:

#365blockchallenge

I am still stuck on my May 14th block.  I am mostly stuck because I moved it off the sewing table to make room for the Halloween placemats.  I have a half finished block, just need to move that back over to the sewing table.  It is time to cut a few more of these blocks as well.

Cosmos Mystery Quilt – Team Catherine

Clue 3 arrived this week.  I didn’t mean to work on it, really!  I decided to open it to just look and the next thing I know I have it laid out over my placemats sewing through the A of the clue. LOL!  This mystery quilt thing is very addicting.  Here is a progress picture:img_2678

Quilters Planner BOM

It’s a new month and a new block.  This week is fabric pull but I have already pulled and cut my blocks.  Can’t wait for the 15th to get here to sew up the next to last block for this sew-a-long.  December will be top assembly month.  This is another one that it seems like we just started the SAL.  Love the fabric pull for this quilt.  I can’t wait to put it together.

Applique Update

Lining up my next quarter projects.  I haven’t touched the two from Quarter 3 – Wooly Jack ‘O Lantern and Blooming Pansies.  Time to reset and get back into the groove.

Quilting to be Done

We can add my Halloween placemats to this list.  On the placemats, I settled on pumpkins with orange thread.  I did attempt a variegated.  I didn’t really like it.  I swear that every time I am on white is when the machine would get “stuck” while free motion quilting.  Once these are done, they will be adorable.

I really thought I would finish up my charity quilt, but alas, it is still hanging out   I have to keep reminding myself that it needs to be done so here you are listening to me talk about it once again.

Of course, my 2010 NYE quilt still needs to be finished.  I really want to finish this one so I can have a new quilt for MY bed.  This quilt is destined for my room.

My new pole extensions came for my Baby Lock Cornet.  I just need to make an appointment to get the tech to come out and service my machines and attach the new piece.  What I thought I would really like when I test drove this machine has been a major obstacle for me with all the big quilts I do.  At some point, I will have to upgrade to a bigger frame.

As a side note, I have gotten a ton of compliments on my fmq on the Autumn and Blooming Apples wall hangings.  With the muslin background on the Autumn, you really can see my stitching.  Looking at it every day (in my office) has actually added a little mental relief and feel good.  When I am on phone calls (a lot), I am staring at these quilts.  What a confidence builder it has been.

Other News

When I started this blog two hours ago, I didn’t think I had much to say.  LOL!  As usual, I can mange to ramble on for a while.

I joined in on an Instagram Photo Challenge called #iloveEPPparty2019  We just wrapped up day 4 of a month long challenge.  I am seeing a lot of familiar faces and a whole bunch of new faces.  One of the things I seem to have fallen into with this English Paper Piecing community is a ton of British quilters.  Last year, add a ton of Down Under Quilters (New Zealand and Australia).  I love meeting all these great folks.  As I was pretty honest that I am on my very first EPP project, the community has been extremely supportive and helpful.  Today’s prompt was how many hexie flowers have you made.  I have never made one.  So I decided last night to cut and baste my hexie flower.  Hexie flowers are so different then the Farmers Wife quilt which is more traditional shapes.  Fun!  Fun!  Fun!

Last of the news, Shaun and I are in Vacaville, California for another weekend of hockey.  This is league play but so teams don’t have to travel as much you play four games in one weekend (just like tournaments).  We lost our first game to our North Bay Teammates.  The Golden State Elite have a South Bay and North Bay team.  Tomorrow we play the 3rd ranked team in the USA – Jr Ducks at 6am.  (#groan)  Even the other two games are against some nationally ranked youth hockey teams.  It will be a tough weekend.  Per parents in the know, this is our hardest weekend.  Go GSE!

Time to do a little EPP’ing while watching the Sharks game!

Have a great weekend!
