Quilt Diary: Trinket Sew-A-Long Top Finish!

Hello Everyone!  It is Hockey Wednesday which means I get some time to work on my blog.  (Yea! for hockey)

I have been very busy with life this past week.  Not as much sewing as one would like, but more than I thought I would get.  TODAY I finished putting together the quilt top which was my #onethingwithamyfinish for the week. I still need to assemble the back, layer, baste, quilt, and bind.  It was a great experience and practice in Foundation Paper Piecing.  Fear is gone.  FPP will not be my preferred method of making a quilt.  All the reasons to do it didn’t really materialize for me, so obviously, I do need more practice and I will eventually pick up another one to do.

I made this all with Alison Glass Kalidescope fabrics.  The colors are awesome.  I have some concerns with the loose weave and raveling.  I put it out on Instagram and got some feedback.  One lady said she had washed hers and the colors never faded!  That is a major plus.  Someone else suggested dense quilting to help with the loose ends and raveling.  I have been watching my craftsy free motion classes and have some ideas.  Currently considering a diagonal grid on the quilt in 2 inch or 2.5 inch increments.  But I am getting ahead of myself.  I still need to use all my leftover fabric (and blocks) to make my backing.   I am thinking I will keep it in the rainbow them and maybe even do something similar to the jelly roll race and do one continuous rainbow with my 5 inch strips I cut and see where that leads me.  I have just as much fun making backs for my quilts as I do the tops.  Because I like to use up all my scraps, sometimes they are just as complicated as the front.  In this case the grid quilt will make it a reversible quilt.  I’m so excited.

Looked out at the rink and saw they were doing wind sprints.  Glad it is Shaun and not me!

Since I only worked on the trinket quilt all week, I don’t really have anything else to report except for my handwork projects so here are the updates on those.

I started sewing block 23 at hockey practices this week.  I am actually almost done with it.  I just have one more section to finish and attach to the block.  Then I will start block 24.  Block 24 is a lot of large pieces so it should go pretty fast.  We have a hockey tournament this weekend in LA so there is anticipation of sewing time.  My daughter is joining us, so may not be as much as I want or it may be just right.  I will need to do the fabric pull for the next two blocks this upcoming week and probably should prep 25 &26 but I don’t think time will allow for that.  I am excited about block 25 because I finally get to use some of those gorgeous yellows I have sitting in a pile on my dining room table.

Sunflower Wooly Mug Rug

Between doctor appointments and hockey practices, I was able to draw out and iron my wool pieces for this totally cute mug rug.  I absolutely adore sunflowers.  The way Shabby Fabrics have drawn out the applique pieces, it should be super fast to applique.  The flower is just three pieces!!  It has the most adorable lady bug.  My plan tonight is to fuse all the applique pieces to the background so I can have it with me for the hockey tournament this weekend.  Just in case there is time.

On the sewing table

I really wish I had enough time to work on my 365 block challenge.  I am anxious to get back to this one.  It has been fun.  I noticed that some of the blocks are the same as in the farmers wife I am doing.  I even saw Corn and Beans block (even used the same name).

The other one that has been on my mind a lot is the May Pieced Table Runner.  I really want to get back to this one.  I have all the fabric, it is just a matter of focus.  I haven’t really appliqued (other than by hand) since my sewing room got flooded out two years ago.  It is hard to believe my room has been back together a year this July.  It takes so long to put things back in place and unpack.  I am in love with the colors.  I picked teal and coral.  The June one came out already and I love it too.  I need more hours to do all this creative stuff.

The last thing that should not take look and will be fun is the table cloth for my daughter’s patio table.  I had really expected to be able to take it to LA with us but time got away from me.  She will be here in June so gotta make it happen.

Hockey is almost over and it is time to wrap it up and hunt down all those pictures for you to look at.
