To Do Tuesday #153

Hello everyone! Hard to believe the kiddos are headed back to school. Summer went way too fast. Plus it is just sad to think that we end summer in August now. I like it better when school started in September. There just seemed to be more …. Summer.

The plan is to linkup with Carol @ Quilt Schmilt again this week for To Do Tuesday. Jump over and check out the projects.

Weekly Progress

I had some time in the studio a few times this week. I swear I did as much unsewing as I did sewing this week. Sometimes it is like that. Let me share.

Sparkle & shine 2021 cotton cuts mystery quilt

I had a little trouble this week with a lot of unsewing. The instructions I refer to is by Fabric A. I attached to the wrong side forgetting that my center was currently a square. I didn’t catch it until I laid it out to take a photo.

After getting both pieced borders unstitched and restitched to the correct sides, it was time to add the next pieced borders. This time I pinned it to the top wrong and TRIMMED before sewing. I usually pin from the middle out. I got a little cocky since I was so close to being done. I trimmed after pinning one side. Pinned the other and realized it wasn’t centered correctly! These mystery quilts come with all the pieces precut which means you have NO extra. I almost set it aside since I seemed to be not in the right mind for sewing. Instead, I persevered.

I sewed back the piece I cut but now the border was about 1/2 short (hmmm. Imagine that). This bordered HAD to be centered as it was a pieced border. I looked in the project box and realized I had one last border to add after this one so I used it to make up for my mistake. It worked. I hodge podged the last border. Viola! Finished assembling Clue 10.

Went back to my project box to figure out why I had so much fabric. Reread Clue 10 instructions and realized I had chosen to “enlarge” the quilt with one more border around the outside. So instead of being done, I have one more border to sew this week. I will show you the end result next week.

Churn Dash blocks

I was so focused on Sparkle and Shine that I did not work on anything else except for using these churn dash blocks as my leaders and enders. I did finish two!

Binding

Under the Needle: Spring Placemat binding

The only other project I worked on this week was cutting the binding for my spring placemats. I trimmed up one of the placemats. I never realized that this strip was a Kaffee fabric until yesterday. I like how the strips are in a chevron and each stripe is not a straight line. I am going to have to keep an eye out for more of this fabric.

Weekly To Do List

Nala preparing to cut fabric

This is my updated To Do list for this coming week:

  • STILL need to change rotary blades especially since it is now skipping which means the blade has a knick
  • Find my insert for the 770 and my sewing table. My shoulders are getting tired with the elevation.
  • Dedicate another 30 minutes to unpacking the sewing studio
  • Still need to find a backing for ARE YOU GAME? Quilt top
  • Don’t want to forget to sketch the second floor so I can plan new furniture purchases
  • Move cross stitch supplies & projects downstairs to my almost organized office
  • Finish Ruby’s Garden block 25
  • Start Queen of Diamond block 3-4
  • Setup Cutting Station
  • Cut last border for Sparkle & Shine
  • Finish Sparkle & Shine quilt top
  • Prepare backing for Sparkle & Shine
  • Cut & prepare Sparkle & Shine binding
  • Cut last border for Dragonfruit
  • Finish Dragonfruit quilt top
  • Prep binding for Spring Placemats
  • Trim Spring Placemats
  • Finish Spring Placemats
  • Find a main project for September quilt retreat at Zephyer Cove
  • Find (desperately) long arm supplies & tools!!!!

I have a quilt zoom day on Friday so the list is pretty ambitious but doable considering I will get 6 hours of quilting time.

Musings

These two absolutely love it when I head to the sewing studio. They are so comfortable there. I have realized that I will need to add a cat post or cat table to the room so they can have their own space (not that cats ever respect YOUR space). I am pleased that Nala continues to lay in the designated spot on the back of my patriotic project bag. It gives me hope that I can sorta get her to at least lay where she isn’t in the way. LOL 😹

Happy mail

I received my two fancy tutto bags for my Bernina 770 and Bernina 570. I searched the internet for a Kaffee and Tula bag and found them! Brewer Sewing had them and I already received them! I will be taking them to the retreat when I go.

Today I also received my Alison Glass box but I haven’t open it yet. It should be 2 1/2 squares plus other swag from Alison.

Tula Pink designed a patch and charm that she released on her website this week. I ordered both colorways with the plan to use them to make a class project for a virtual retreat I am doing in September right after the quilt retreat.

Happy quilting this week! May you enjoy every project you are working on!!!

  1. Peggy it must have been something in the air! I found myself doing a lot of unstitching at the same time you were! I love the pieced borders. Good for you for persevering! That’s a very ambitious list so I hope you managed as much progress as you hoped. Thank you for sharing on ToDo Tuesday. What fun that Nala still likes your patriotic bag for a perch. Both Nala and Simba are perfect quilting companions. 😁 Carol
