APPLIQUE DIARY: Just One January Finish so Far

Last week and weekend the weather was very distracting getting up to the high 70’s here in San Jose, California. It was better to be outside than in.

With focusing on trying to wrap up my Christmas quilt, my applique projects have not gotten all the attention they deserve. I did a regroup a few weeks ago to see where I was at and what steps were needed for my current projects.

NEW STARTS

Of my five new possible starts, I got rolling on two of them already. I sewed the background for the Blooming Series: Hearts and I fused February Adoornaments: Hearts.

Two out of Five Possible starts Started

At this point, I will probably set aside Blooming Series: Snowflakes and instead I will search my stash for a March start instead. I may change my mind because the snowflakes will be a quick and easy one with so few items to applique. Stay tuned next month to see what I ended up deciding.

RECENT FINISH – A YEAR OF WORDS: WINTER!

Winter done! A YEAR IN WORDS: WINTER BY SHABBY FABRICS

All this one needed was a binding. After stumbling around again to remember what I should be doing for the foot 71, this one finally rolled off the sewing machine and is proudly displayed in the living room for January. This is a favorite for sure!

BINDING WORTHY – A YEAR OF WORDS: YOU’RE MY SUNSHINE

It was fun quilting the loopy meander for this one. A YEAR IN WORDS: YOU’RE MY SUNSHINE BY SHABBY FABRICS

I had a teal/aqua thread day and was able to finish free motion quilting this one. It is sitting in my rolling assistant waiting for me to make the brown binding and attach it for this August wallhanging.

QUILTING NEEDED

Blooming Stars top half quilted with light blue thread and a loopy meander and stars. BLOOMING SERIES: STARS BY SHABBY FABRICS

On my aqua/light blue thread day, I whipped out loopy meanders for both Blooming Stars and Blooming Sunflowers on the top half of both. I still need to do the straight line quilting for the bottom of both. One uses red and the other uses lime green.

Blooming Sunflowers top half was quilted using aqua thread in another loopy meander with some flowers thrown in.

STITCHING REQUIRED

Blooming Daisies by Shabby Fabric. Pictured here getting light pink magenta buttonhole stitch

Last week I pulled the pink with a hint of magenta thread to applique Blooming Daises and A Year in Words: Summer. These two just need the dark magenta thread to finish off each of them and they will be read for quilting!

A Year in Words: Summer by Shabby Fabrics bucket almost finished…

While I had the pink thread in I sewed the background for Blooming Hearts and fused the Adoornaments Hearts thinking that they would need pink. But they didn’t. So White and Red will be needed to finish off February Adoornament which is going to take a bit of time.

Wrap Up

Applique projects are my first new starts this year. Both starts are series that I started in 2019. I am looking forward to knocking one of these series (Adoornaments) off the WIP list during first quarter 2021.

December was the first time in almost two years where I actually displayed all my applique wall hangings. It felt good finding all the hangers and displaying them the week before Christmas. It made putting up January wallhangings pretty easy.

Now that I am back to that, I will need to fill in the gaps for other series not completed. Before the unexpected remodel, I know I was working on a couple McKenna Ryan’s as well as Bonnie Sullivan’s. My chaos is slowly getting organized.

Enjoy the rest of your week everyone!
